I'm neck-deep in end-of-semester matters, but I just came across this passage in a paper I'm reading, and I just had to share it:

"Society looks at a college graduate as someone who has accomplished something. Having a college degree shows that the person has made an investment in themselves, not only the money part of it, but in the amount of effort it takes."

It's a pleasure to read passages like that, and every semester I read several. It's common to have at least two or three students who want to write about the value of education; I don't remember encountering this attitude very much in students I've taught in other places. It's one of the things I really like about where I'm now teaching . . .

Ah, well. Back to work, alas.
