If I had been born Greek, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' would have been the funniest movie I'd ever seen. If I had been born Greek, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' would have been a complete masterpiece. If I had been born Greek, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' would have probably been one of my favorite all-time movies. But I'm not Greek. So none of that came to pass.

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' was a pretty decent movie. But as I tried to point out in the paragraph above, there was a lot in that movie that I could not relate to being a non-Greek. I understand that part of the appeal of that movie is that it's showing a mostly White audience the loving and lunacy that being in a large Greek family brings.

But I feel that at times, the directors and actors went overboard to show off the many different types of Greek stereotypes. There's the hot head Greek brother who wears undershirts and slicks back his hair. There is the annoyingly talkative aunt who nags and nags and nags like some bad SNL sketch. There was the father who despite being at times overbearing, has a heart of gold. This movie went so far as to showcase stereotypical Greek behavior that he even had the main character's family own a Greek restaurant. I'm not saying that movies should be devoid of stereotypes, because there is always an element of truth to all stereotypes. But when every single character in your movie is a stereotype, it makes your movie all the more harder to watch. I mean, could John Corbett's character be any more typecast. He's the long haired, sensitive teacher type, who does whatever it takes to show acceptance of Nia Varalos' family. I hate to say it, but every single character in this movie is in some way shape or form a stereotype.

But beyond all of that is a sweet, romantic comedy. The thing about romantic comedies is that there is usually something in a romantic comedy that every hopeless romantic can relate to. Being a big fan of romantic comedies, I always like seeing a fresh take an old formula. In the case of 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding,' beyond being a romantic comedy, it's a story about a girl seeking her own independance while coming to grips with her wacked out greek family. Those two themes tend to resonate with nearly everyone on the face of the planet, and they were executed in such a strong manner that it's no wonder that this movie performed as well as it did.

Overall, the movie was pretty decent. There was nothing in the movie that stood out to me. It was an enjoyable movie to watch, but don't expect me to go out for repeated viewings.
