The Emmys

I could really care less about most of the shows that got nominated for awards last night, yet for some reason, I subjected myself to watching the entire 3+ hours of the Emmy Awards Show. I cannot explain what compelled me to watch this show. I can count the number of episodes of "The Sopranos" that I have seen on one hand. The same goes for "6 Feet Under," "Everybody Loves Raymond," and "24." I have not seen one episode of "The Great Race," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," or "C.S.I." In fact, the only shows that I watch with any kind of regularity are "The Conan O'Brien Show," "The Daily Show," and "Crank Yankers." Wait...the list goes on further. I watch Comedy Central regularly and is probably the only station that I watch regularly. I catch TLC shows like "Trading Spaces" and "While You Were Out," when I wanna let my liberated male flag fly highly. I'm a junkie for those makeover types of shows.

Yet I watched the Emmys anyway. Why? I'll tell you why. It's because I wanted to see the John Ritter tribute portion of the show. Quite honestly, I do not know what the big deal is about his passing away. I realize that some people like to get all wrapped around their television heroes, yet I find it hard to get wrapped around Jack Tripper. This may sound callous, but I really don't know what the big deal is with John Ritter's death. It is sad, yes. I understand the feeling of having a sudden death catch you off guard. But it's John Ritter. The country will move on. Now if "Three's Company's" Joyce De Witt had passed on, now that would have been a flags at half-mast type of situation.

Overall, the Emmys were really not well produced and organized. I did not like the fact that there was no single host. I think that sometimes, the host is the only reason to watch a show. I think that Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brien, or Bernie Mac would have done really well as Emmy hosts. The lack of host-format, detracted from the overall funnyness of the show.

Although he was up against Conan, who I think is the funniest person on the planet I was glad to see Jon Stewart take home some Emmys. The Daily Show was had quite an awesome year, as has Conan's show. I really find it quite sad that year in and year out, Leno wins the late night rating wars, yet keeps losing out to Letterman, O'Brien, and the Daily Show. As I told Anya, people like crap. How's that for snobbish?

I find it hard to see to the logic of the voting body of the Emmys. A show like "The Sopranos" wins all the major acting awards (Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor), some directing, and writing awards, YET somehow loses to a show that didn't win ANY of it's major categories. I'm thinking that "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under" split up the vote, and that somehow a critically not well received season like "West Wing" had last year, snuck by them both. I don't give a shit regardless since I watch neither show, but it's just kind of odd how that happened. Makes you wonder.

And I've found out that J-Lo and California Recall jokes have more than worn out their welcome. They've become cliches of a cliche, which means that Jay Leno should be doing these jokes for another 5 months or so.
