Tonight or not tonight? That is the question.

Although not an existential question like "Hamlet's" was, I keep asking myself if I should go all geek tonight and see "The Return of the King" or if I should just wait until tomorrow.

Opening nights are fun. It's fun seeing people dress up and get into the movie. Usually, opening nights are your best crowds because they're the ones who trully love the movie and the literature around the movie. The ones who wait in line for hours on end are the ones who are going to be the most receptive audiences towards the movie itself. Every single big movie that I've seen on opening night has been a great movie experience. 'X2,' both Star Wars prequels, are just a few of the opening night experiences that I remember after the fact.

Plus, I have read nothing but good reviews about this movie. Rotten Tomatoes.com has posted nothing but good reviews. Some critics have compared 'The Return of the King to other big epics like 'Lawrence of Arabia,' 'Star Wars,' and 'The Wizard of Oz.' Critics and fans reviews have been nothing but glowing. That is trully astonishing to me. There has not been a movie of recent memory that has received ALL positive reviews like this one has.

But I'm not going to set myself up for failure. I have realistic expectations going in. I think that it's going to be a trully fantastic movie, but I'm by no means expecting a perfect movie (if there is such a thing).

I'm sorry I've been such a geek about all this. It's certainly been a good year for geekdom. Two Matrix movies, an X-Men movie, a LOTR movie, and everything else in-between.

In the course of writing this review I think I may have answered my own question. I'm leaning towards going tonight, but we'll see. UNT is in a bowl game tonight after all. YEEHAW!

matt out
