I'm not sure how many of you are into American Idol, but in the first few days of the auditions is when you'll find the best bang for your buck. Because not only do you get to watch talented singers belt out their favorite tunes, you also get to see not so talented people sing and try to make it as pop stars. It's my guess that Fox relies heavily on the first few weeks of the audition to draw the most ratings, because as the contestants wind down on the show, the show gets more and more boring. I guess it defies Reality Television logic, in that most shows only get better and more catty as the contestants keep getting voted off. American Idol is the opposite.

Usually, the people who are really really bad, have really diva like attitudes and let the judges know when they disapprove of how they were critiqued.

In the first few weeks of the audition, a young University of California student named William Hung tried out by singing Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." He more or less butchered the song (although he does have a decent voice) and butchered any kind of dance routine and pop idol sensibilities that he was trying to get across. But instead of getting really catty when the judges ripped into him, he politely told them that "he did his best and that he doesn't regret trying out." And you could see the complete look of surprise from the judges that this courteous young man, was just trying out and doing his thing, and that all he wanted was his chance to prove himself. It was probably my favorite moment of any American Idol clip that I've seen.

Well apparently, he was such a hit with a lot of people that he has been asked to come and perform at everything from birthday parties to College Basketball games. Ellen Degenneres has had him on her show performing. And supposedly, he's being approached by some record producers who want to him to record an album of his favorite Ricky Martin songs. Sure, it has shades of a Wesley Willis type of thing, but hey, as long as he's making the music he wants to make, and making people smile along the way, what's the harm?
