At the request of my mom and sister,

-----------------------------------------------------
The question

Summer or Winter Olympics

Do you prefer the thrill of seeing track stars and olympic sized pools, or the chill of seeing the luge and figure skating?

-----------------------------------------------------

Summer Olympics

Track and field, rowing, swimming, archery, basketball, soccer, baseball

Winter Olympics

the luge, the bobsled, figure skating, speed skating, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, curling

-----------------------------------------------------

This one for me is a slam dunk. Wanna know which is greater? It's simple.

How many Winter Olympic stars do you know? Ummm...Nancy Kerrigan. The 1980 USA Hockey team, Bonnie Blair. Oksana Baiul. Eric Heiden...ummm...

Now watch this drive...

Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz, Nadia Comeneci, Kerri Strugg, The Dream Team, Michael Johnson, Carl Lewis, Jesse Owens, Cassius Clay, George Foreman, Bela Karoli etc etc etc etc.

That was stream of conscious. The names flowed out. I wouldn't have gotten some of those Winter Olympics people without the help from your friendly neighborhood Google search engine.

Which of the Winter Olympics events are all that memorable? Downhill skiing? Sure. Figure Skating? Definitely. The bobsled/luge? Yeah, yeah. And what else? Curling??? hahahaha

Summer Olympics have swimming, track AND field (which encompass javelin, shot-put, long jump, short distance races, long distance races), soccer, baseball, basketball, and of course Gymnastics. Each sport is high profile. Each is memorable. Each produce superstars.

Plus I'm a traditions freak. It goes without saying that the summer olympics have that in spades.

As far as social and cultural relevence, the summer olympics have provided SOOO many more memorable moments. Besides the 1980 Men's Hockey team and "Miracle On Ice," the only other memorable winter Olympics moment is Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding.

The summer olympics has too many moments to name. There's the Tommie Smith and John Carlos protest at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Ben Johnson's steroid scandal, the 1972 Munich terrorist incident, Jesse Owen's smearing the fascists in Germany, Jim Thorpe, blah blah blah blah.

I don't even see it as much of a contest. Any takers? :-)

matt out
