Had a fun weekend.

Started it off by taking down a 9,800 dollar check to the Parkland Rape Crisis Center, on behalf of the FMLA and the Vagina Monologues. They gave Anya and I a tour of the facilities, and we got to meet a couple members of their staff. It was *really* rewarding to get the opportunity to do this, and I'm sure they'll be able to put the money to good use. They informed us that they're going to be using it for a new Child Play Therapy program that they're trying to get started.

After taking the check down, Anya and I ate some Ninfa's Tex Mex. It was not as good as I remembered it, but it satisfied a Tex-Mex craving I had been having.

While at Ninfa's, Anya and I had an interesting discussion about acting. We talked about actors and who we considered to be great actors. We had watched "Edward Scissorhands" the night before, and I asked her what she thought of it. She thought it was a pretty good movie, but thought that Johnny Depp was amazing. I agreed, but then we started talking about it more, and we both came to the conclusion that Johnny Depp is not only a great actor, he is the greatest actor working in movies today.

Some of you are probably saying, "What the..." But hear me out a second. Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, and Sean Penn are all really great actors, but they almost always play roles where too much of *them* comes out. I rarely see one of their movies, and not think, "Oh that is Denzel Washington playing an Army General. Or that's Denzel Washington holding up a hospital." But Johnny Depp totally inhabits a character through and through, that I have rarely, if ever, said the same thing about Johnny Depp.

And it goes beyond mere appearance, it's about mannerisms and little quirks of just standing around. He completely inhabits his characters. All you have to do is look at the varying roles that he's played. Edward Scissorhands looks and behaves totally different from Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Carribean," who looks and behaves completely different from Ichabod Crane in "Sleepy Hollow," who looks and behaves completely different than his characters in "Chocolat" or "Finding Neverland." He throws in enough character quirks, that any trace of "Johnny Depp" goes out the window.

But I digress....

After Ninfa's, we went over to hang out with the Geists for the rest of the evening. It was fun hanging out with the Geists for the rest of the evening. It was so fun in fact, that we came back to hang out with them on Saturday too. Not only did we get to hang out with them, we met MaDear and Jessie at the local Cinemark for Disney's "The Ice Princess." The movie was pretty Disney. I realized that most Disney live action movies follow the Disney animated story line. Princess meets Prince, dark witches come in and try to mess stuff up, Princess and Prince end up victorious. Only in this movie, the witches were the big bad mothers of the movie.

I juggle with where I'm going to put this movie on my list for the year. I have to be fair to the movie and judge it for what it was trying to accomplish. In this case, I think my niece couldn't erase the smile from her face so mission accomplished. But I also have to rate it versus the other movies I've seen this year. I think I have to place it above both "Hostage" and "Be Cool." Woe is them.

Both of the sports movies I've seen this year (Ice Princess and Friday Night Lights) have been less about the sports they're portraying, and more about their wacky parents. Kinda interesting tidbit....

Anya and I filled out the rest of the weekend with homework and "Tony Hawk 3" on the Playstation.

Good times.

matt out
