Hmmmm....This was a Texan weekend through and through.

On Friday, we made our way down to Babe's in Carrolton for my cousin-in-law (second cousin???--how's this thing work) Jon's birthday. Note to anyone reading this, if you ever have visiting friends from out of state, and want to show them a taste of Southern cooking, Babe's is a good bet. You get 4 choices, Chicken Fried Steak, fried Catfish, Fried Chicken, or Fried Chicken Fingers (notice a pattern?). They bring out a plate with a mound of said item, and bowl after bowl of the tastiest corn, green beans, and mashed potaters. And if you like Biscuits, Babe's is your place.

After that, the family went over to Bess and Jon's for cake and coffee. I was uber impressed with their rather large apartment. It was quite impressive. It was fun, as it always is, just sitting and hanging out with the family for the evening. We also made a tentative plan to show Episode IV to J and J for the first time this coming up weekend. That'll be interesting. I can always tell them that "I was there when you first saw a Star Destroyer..." ;-)

Anya and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary 3 days early on Saturday. We were going to check out Fort Worth's botanical gardens, but the upper 90's heat persuaded us to get a little more creative...at least a little more A/C minded. So we opted for the Fort Worth Museum of Science. It had been at least 10 years since I'd been here, and thankfully not much had changed. The exhibits were updated, but the hands-on approach to science was still the order of the day.

We made it a point to check out the Omni theater, which hadn't changed a bit. It's still the same puke fest it was last time I was here. We sat "a little" closer than I would have liked, but we enjoyed the show a lot. The show, in case you're curious, was called "Fighter Pilot," and was basically a 30 minute commercial for Boeing.

We rounded up the day with a dinner worthy of an "anniversary" at the H3 Steakhouse at the Fort Worth Stockyards. Remember what I said earlier about Babe's being representative of Texas style cooking? Well, the H3 Steakhouse and the Fort Worth Stockyards are about as Texan as you can get. We walked in smelling normal, but left smelling like we'd been standing downwind of a pig roast for the past 3 hours. But man, they have the best steaks I've ever had.

Sunday was a wash, but I did manage to read Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" for the first time. Good stuff. I think that book should be required reading for Sociology students, since it's all about crime and punishment, religious hypocrisy, anti-nomian discussions, and of course, social stigmas. Good stuff. I can't say that I'm a big fan of that era of American Lit. Twain's about all this ADHD mind can take in way of 19th Century Lit.

back to work with me.
