Almost on a whim, Anya and I decided to trek down to San Antonio to catch game 2 of the Spurs vs. Mavericks playoffs series. They lost, big time, but it was still a fun experience.

It had been a while since I had been to an NBA game, so the whole live basketball experience felt really fresh and new. The difference between watching a game on television and watching a game in person is pretty significant. When you watch it on tv, you watch the game as part of a larger overall production, so it almost takes on the form of anything else you'd watch on television. But when you watch the game in person, it's pretty evident that all you're really watching is a group of grown men play a basketball game. It's like watching a YMCA game, only with better players and more bells and whistles. It's one of those things where when you step back and see something through objective eyes, it's pretty funny...

But yeah, the Spurs got KILLED. They wore the right uniforms and they were out there on the basketball court, but they just did not show up. I'm not too worried though, because I know that this was pretty much their 3rd game in about 5 days. They don't play again until Saturday night, so we'll see how a better rested SA team plays.

But beyond their fatigue and lack of a cohesive game plan, the referees completely SUCKED last night. I'm not making excuses here, because I think the Spurs would have lost anyways, but the refs really took the fun out the game. This was one of those games where EVERY LITTLE FRIGGIN' PLAY got whistled. It was one of those games where they'd call some kind of foul against your team, then when they replayed it on the jumbotron, it was CLEARLY evident that they made the wrong call. The crowd at multiple times let out a "REFS YOU SUCK" chant.

Like I said, it probably wouldn't have mattered, but nothing kills a potential drive faster than some ticky tack call. Damn you, Steve Javie. The fact that I know your name means that you're not doing a good job.

But oh well. The game was fun. Well, the atmosphere was fun, but the game pretty much sucked. It's always fun to get together with 20,000 fans and yell at grown men. ... Yeah, as I said, it all seems rather silly when you look at it objectively.
