LOST 3.6

Overall impression:

The LOST mini-season ended with a mighty bang last night. This season of LOST has been really intense, with each episode upping the ante.

Last night's episode started somewhat slowly, but as the episode progressed, the intensity kept going to another level. Last night's episode began on a pianissimo volume, but slowly crescendoed until the end, where Jack's actions made sure it ended on a triple forte.

Last night's episode was the only episode I can recall where I had to stand up in the final scenes due to how intense the situation was. I mean, Jack really just took over. Luke and I were speaking recently about LOST (surprise, surprise), and one of our mutual complaints with this new season was that it was looking as if Ben was always going to have the upper hand over Jack and the Lostaways, but last night's episode seemed to ease that fear. Jack is in control of the situation. Or at least it appears that way.

I loved Jack in this episode. I thought his character really acted in the way that I would expect Jack to act. What he did/is doing in that Emergency Room is exactly what I would expect Jack Shepard to do. And in my opinion, it's now plainly obvious that Jack is the hero of the show. Jack and Locke. Everything revolves around those two characters.

The acting last night was brilliant. Each actor has taken their acting to a new level with this season. Matthew Fox has been really surprising to me. Through season 3, he's really done a fantastic job at showing all the complexities of his character.

The same goes for Evangeline Lilly, though Jack's been a little more consistent from episode to episode. Their reunion scene from last night was perfectly acted. No matter what happened between Sawyer and Kate last night, the scene of Jack and Kate in the cell confirmed that this love triangle is far from over. You can tell that there's *something* there between the two of them.

I have to say that I hope that it's Sawyer and Kate. I think those two have terrific chemistry, but their characters are so similar and complex, that it's hard to see how they couldn't end up together. You know that when Kate and Sawyer wax romatically to one another, they are both coming from similar places. Who knew that Kate and Sawyer would be one of the great romances on television.

Great scenes from last night:

-Locke giving Eko's eulogy in the forest. I don't so much remember what he said, but the scene was beautifully shot, with the rays of light shining down on Locke as he spoke. I love that this show has such a strong and profound spiritual message.

-Kate and Jack's reunion was perfectly written and acted. I love that these two characters get to go from one pure emotion to the complete opposite emotion within the span of one relatively short scene.

-The scene where Pickett was getting ready to off Sawyer was really intense. One of the brilliant things about LOST is that you're never entirely sure who in the hell is going to get killed off the show. So last night, I assumed that Jack was going to be the hero of the day and would stop the killing, but you're never entirely sure.

-Kate climbing in and out of her cage without use of a stunt double. How bad ass is that?

-Locke finding a clue on Eko's "Jesus Stick." It set out a clear path for Eko to follow. I can't wait to see where this character goes. And it seems as if Sayid's going to be right there with him. Speaking of, I really miss Sayid. I can't wait til he gets his own episode.

-I read an interview with the producers yesterdays in which they said that we will get a lot of substantial answers within the first few episodes after the hiatus. I like that they alluded to this with Locke saying that the island would give them a clue or answer as to what they're supposed to do. I like that Locke got a line which seemed to come directly from the viewers' mouths. "The Island will help us figure out what's going on. Let's hope it's not too long before we find out what the heck it might be." Amen, brother.

-That love/sex scene was HOT!!! Muy caliente. If anyone ever wants to know what the limit is for what they can show on network television, watch this scene.

-All the scenes with Jack and Ben were really intense. From Jack's refusal to do the surgery, to Ben's reaction to it. I am now pretty heavily into the "Ben is pure evil" camp.

-The Alex with the sling shot scene was both really intense and kinda corny. I like that Alex is a bit like her mother in that she's always running around stealth like, but a SLING SHOT??? But I guess that would be the only type of weapon that she'd have access to, so who knows? I like that they alluded to the notion that Carl (Alex's boyfriend?) had been "taken care of." Death? Prison? Can't wait to find out.

Questions Answered/Raised

-"Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list." Who in the hell is Jacob? Popular theories, Ben and Jacob are twins. Jacob is the eye patch man. Jacob is some unseen character who's the next step in the Others hierarchal chain.

-Are the Others trying to get Kate pregnant? If Jack wasn't on the list, it seems that the main reason to bring Kate and Sawyer together would be to get Kate impregnated. Plus, Juliet is a fertility doctor...

That's all I got...Great episode. WHY OH WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL FEBRUARY??? :-(
