Selecting Shannon

Any LOST fans out there ever had LOST themed dreams? I've had a couple over the few years I've watched the show. They're usually very disorienting and disturbing, kinda like the show, but more so because it feels like you're right there with the characters as they're being put through the grinder.

But last night, I had a particularly funny LOST dream. One of my more recent duties at work is sitting in on numerous search committees, both for our office and other offices around campus. It's usually a tedious process, and because I'm still new to the process, or maybe because I often feel apathetic to the process, I usually only say something if what I'm going to say is of the utmost importance.

For some reason, I was sitting in on the LOST cast member selection meeting. I usually try to pay attention in meetings, but as is sometimes the case, my ADD tendencies take over and I start planning my escape route in case of a zombie invasion.

But everyone in the room was debating Maggie Grace's casting for Shannon as if it were the biggest decision in the history of the world. "But everyone on this show is so talented, I'm not sure Maggie Grace fits in." "Yeah, I don't think the show can survive if we cast a weak link on day one." "She's a little too WB for our show. Maybe she'd be better cast on 'Veronica Mars.'"

Where I would usually just sit there and listen to the group think take over, I decided to stand-up for Maggie Grace's audition tape. "Look, I know she's not the greatest actor out there. I also know that we can continue this search for weeks and weeks, looking for the perfect candidate. But I think Maggie Grace was born to play this role. I mean, she already kind of looks like Paris Hilton. Plus, it's not like this role is going to require much from any actress that plays it. I say we choose Maggie Grace and be done with this process."

I felt like Henry Fonda putting his knife on the table in "12 Angry Men" as I shifted the perspective of everyone in the room. "Yeah, I can see that." "Good point, Matthew."

I woke myself up laughing on that one.
