Impossible to Classify

So I've been going through my iTunes and have been changing the "genres" of each of the songs and artists so that it'll be easier to make playlists that suit the kind of music I'm listening to.

Right now, I'm keeping it broad; rock, folk, hip hop, pop, etc. It's been hard classifying the "pop" stuff. I have two categories in play. I have the Beatles and Elliott Smith stuff, aka anything that sounds like it was done by the Beatles or derived from the Beatles. And I have a "popular" category, where stuff like Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, and Phil Collins go. It's a catch-all, if you will.

But I've been having the hardest time classifying mid-60's to late-60's era Bob Dylan. It's not quite rock in the way that I'm classifying Jimi Hendrix or Steppenwolf. It's certainly not folk like his early work and like most of Donovan's music. It's not pop like Aimee Mann and the Beatles.

He's somewhat unclassifyable (is that a word?). Anyone have any ideas?

- Matt
