Earlier today, a how-to-deal-with-Arizona discussion was burning the wires in one of my online networks. Just now, I read a poem by Nicole Walker called False Documents:

You wanted to drink the Mountain Dew before it turned toxic
in the hot Phoenix sun as you asked, doesn't this green
sludge make me American enough?

The minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix writes:

I am asking you to come to Phoenix from July 28-30th to be a part of the National Day of Non Compliance with SB 1070. On July 29th, the day SB 1070 goes into effect, Maricopa County law enforcement has announced major sweeps and raids to implement the law. Whether or not the law takes effect that day, all will be needed--particularly ministers, with your collars on--to witness and support families.

We need at least 200 clergy and laity from across the country to come and support the human rights movement here on the ground. Thanks to a generous donation from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, we can provide assistance with travel to those who most need it. We can also help with home hospitality.

[As always, there are many other ways to provide support and bear witness. For instance, the Tennnessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition are co-hosting a community hearing today (July 22) on racial profiling.

[Disclosures: the minister at UUCP was an intern and sabbatical minister at my church. I am not affiliated with TIRRC, but heard about the hearing from a friend at FUUN who plans to attend.]

Folded Word is hosting 24/7: "For the first 24 days of August, everyone will dedicate time each day to write either a piece of twitter fiction (<140 characters), prose poetry (<100 words), short poetry (<9 lines), micro fiction (<250 words), or flash fiction (<500 words). The last 7 days of August will be dedicated to revising these works."

This I think I can swing. We shall see. In the meantime, I've got several more hours of coffee-swigging and citation-slinging before I can call it a night...
