From hither, thither, and yonder, some things that have been sitting on the sideboard...

  • at rhubarb: smiling at the person in the mirror

  • Margie Maddux Newman on handling trolls:

You have a life; Internet trolls do not. This means they will always have the last word, and that's okay. You should only respond to a troll's comment to clear your name, clarify a statement, defend your belief, or correct a fact on the record. You aren't in this to win an argument; say only what you need to say and move on.

  • In the July 22 edition of The Green Hills News, there was an article about Swett's moving from Farmer's Market to Green Hills. Swett spoke both about using local growers ("the goal is to serve as many fresh vegetables from the state of Tennessee as we can") and renovating the old cafeteria space to switch from electric to gas: "In my opinion, in a commercial kitchen, electric is the equivalent of riding a tricycle on the interstate."

  • In a July 11 edition of The New York Times, there was a Douglas Martin obituary of the Rev. William R. Callahan, a physicist and dissident Roman Catholic priest whose goals included the ordination of women as priests and was expelled from the Jesuits for being "a thorn in the church's side for generations...he aggravated church officials during the American tour of Pope John Paul II in 1979 by imploring priests to refuse to help the pope in celebrating Mass. Father Callahan's hope was that more lay women would then have to be enlisted to assist at the services." Also:

Father Callahan mourned the waning of optimism among his generation of Catholic reformers as the church hierarchy grew increasingly conservative. In an interview with The Post in 2006, he said he drew inspiration from Don Quixote.

"He dreams, he has visions, but he's basically a silly old man," Father Callahan said.

"When people work on social justice issues, they don't win much and wind up dropping out. To laugh at oneself from the beginning is essential."
