Overnighting at the ER

Urgh -- still trying to recover from a rough night in the Children's Emergency Department Sunday night at WakeMed hospital. My night wasn't near as bad, though, as it was for Elizabeth and especially for Drew.

After celebrating his birthday three days early, a b-day he shares with his ma, we got home Sunday night around 8 p.m., and he was wheezing. He's been sick with a cold and a cough for about a week or so, and we ended up taking him to the emergency department. Ironically, it was at WakeMed, the same hospital where Elizabeth works.

They gave him four different nebulizer treatments (the last two of epinephrine did the trick), and he and Elizabeth ended up spending the night there. I felt like a dog because I had to leave and get some sleep for work the next day, so I left at about 1:30 in the morning, and Elizabeth's parents hung out with them for the rest of the time.

Through it all, Drew was a champ. I think the little fella had fun, actually, though he didn't get much sleep. The epinephrine made him incredibly hyper -- at one point he was crawling in circles on the hospital bed, and cackling maniacally -- and I know Lizzie didn't get much rest either. Nothing sucks so much as seeing your child sick.

He's feeling much better now. We just need him to get over his cough and runny nose. And all of us need to get caught up on some SLEEP.

I just wish I had video of Drew all hyped up and crawling all over the bed. Or a photo of Elizabeth curled up with him in his industrial-sized crib (the kind with bars all the way up to the ceiling)!

I tell ya, I know it's a cliche, but good health is something you should never take for granted. Just one night in the hospital with a sick youngster is enough of a reminder for me. And as luck would have it, the last time Elizabeth and I spent the night in a hospiatal was almost exactly a year ago, when Drew was born. He turns one tomorrow!

It's Double Birthday Day for him and Lizzie. Which means I have some wrapping to do tonight (provided that Amazon came through with that last box o' goodies today!). Later!
