26 Months is a long time...

I find it hard to believe, but I just completed a personal best.

You see, since I graduated from college way back in '92, I've had this nomadic problem. I get antsy if I've been at a job for more than a year and a half or so. In that time I've been a junior high English teacher, house painter, waiter, construction worker, gread student, newspaper editor, and technical writer, among other less glamorous jobs... Just ask me about that year I had to file half a dozen W-2 forms! I get bored easily, and if I feel like I'm in a dead end, I get frustrated and start looking.

In any case, I just finished up my longest consecutive stint at one job, ever. I started working here back in January '04, as an editor and technical writer for online courses and related material. It was interesting work, and I got to revamp the bloated style guide and do some writing about computer hardware (only to learn that I really disliking writing about computer hardware! I'm a software guy, through and through).

But what made it best was the people I worked with. That's the case with any job, really. Even if the work can be mind-numbingly dull or the text I'm editing cursed with marketing-ese, I can handle it if I have fun people to hang out with. We had a really great group of folks, from our graphics person to our Flash gurus to our audio and other editor-types. We cracked jokes and worked our asses off.

And today I went out to lunch with them all, and then I was done working with them. My last day at the corporate campus. I feel a bit sad, now that I have time to reflect on it -- the past few weeks have been heinously busy, as I believe I've said before.

And on Monday I get to dive into a great, great opportunity at a new company. I'll have challenging work and plenty of opportunities for my voice to be heard (something that's not easy to do in a huge multinational). I'm ready for the challenge.

And I can always meet my former co-workers for lunch or a beer after work.

Now, to find some time to get back on track with this novel... Later!
