Snippets from a week

  • Even though I got little fiction writing this week, I still kept waking up at 4:30 a.m., ready to pry myself out of bed and write.
  • Drew is saying "All aboard!" now. Shouting it, most times.
  • Elizabeth and I just watched Dateline. Dateline! (It was about two couples having issues. Not with the other couple, either. S-E-X issues!)
  • I have to go to Cincinnati in less than 2 weeks to do a software training, and I had 0 content created on Wednesday, and a 40-slide PowerPoint assembled by the time I left today. Crazy.
  • The story I wrote with the crazy-talented Greg van Eekhout, "California King," was listed as an Honorable Mention story in the most recent Year's Best Science Fiction (ed. Gardner Dozois); ironic, in that the story isn't SF at all, but horror and fantasy and Everclear songs.
  • I think I put in about 60 hours this week, including 2 hours of working on my laptop in bed on Wednesday night. Wireless internet rocks!
  • I finished Graham Joyce's Facts of Life today, and I'd say it was the best novel I've read this year, but I've only read like 3 novels so far, because I am slack. I still like his Smoking Poppy better, but Facts was a fine book, and he handled a large cast quite nicely, and the way he tied up all his plots was lovely to witness.
  • I often think I'm much too boring in person to be a good fiction writer.
  • Drew has started giving hugs when they're needed the most -- I was putting his magnetic numbers back on the fridge after a long day at work on Wednesday, and he came up and put his head on my back and rested it there for a lovely 5 seconds. Then he said "Lap!" and crawled into my lap.
  • I think I can understand how people can become workaholics with their day jobs -- I'm sort of wanting to get back to work on my various To-Dos for my job. It's strangely addicting -- I've not had a job where I've wanted to work this hard since I was a junior high teacher fresh out of college. It's a bit scary.
  • Elizabeth has to work tomorrow, so I'm trying to think of fun stuff to do with Drew between naps. His, not mine.
  • I miss being able to drink lots of coffee and lattes and not worrying about my jaw hurting later.
  • Drew turned 19 months old today! Nineteen!
  • I'm drinking wine out of a mug again. Someone stop me...
