It is difficult to comprehend the joy that dogs experience and give. I can only long for the simplicity that they know. I can only hope it is not the necessary price of a higher degree of sentience to find this joy elusive.

At least they can give us this gift, cutting through our complications, and for some reason even when we do not love ourselves they can believe for us that we are loveable.
