I hate this part of the process. This is when I find all the clumsy phrases, droning repetition, unmotivated action, and inane dialogue that my book is REALLY made of, while the delicate imagery, startling characters, and visionary, breathtaking details of setting I intended have vanished like the pathetic illusions they always were.

It's a good thing the writer doesn't have to read a novel one more time than this, or writers everywhere would be throwing themselves in rivers every day.
