Teresa Neilsen Hayden is one of the coolest people I know in the field of science fiction in fantasy, if only for her true-speak about the biz, and her desire not to see newbies crushed under the wheels of scammers and malcontents.

Her advice here is spot on:

While you’re at it, run your new words through Google. It’s surprising how many of them turn out to be the names of drugs, Indian side dishes, or obscure islands.

One of my character's names turns out to be a town in Minnesota, another is a kind of Studebaker, and a favorite variety of wine is not only the name of a Roman Emperor but also a series of garden tools.

There aren't many original names out there, I'm telling you. Google is your friend, but can also be your worst nightmare. You might want to change that perfectly neat-o hero's moniker, once you learn he's named for a brand of condom.
