Not Mary Sue

Okay, so there's a discussion over at the Rumor Mill about one of my darkest fears. Every once in a while, I come over all anxious that some of my characters are Mary Sueish, and have to put them to the test. 'Cause why not? I'm a writer, I can do any damn thing I want to the characters and no one will fault me . . . or not for everything.

I am gladdened that my character "Chaska" is not a Mary Sue, to whit:

"Chaska is only a little like you. He is not at all cool; in fact, he thinks cool is a temperature reading, and when he says "Oh, I just put on whatever old thing's lying around," he means "on the floor, where I threw it last night - but I turned the underwear inside out first." He always knew he was special, destined for great things - and probablyf made sure everyone else knew it too. He's had a rough life - to say the least! Angst? Histronics? His speciality. And you've been sparing with the free handouts: whatever he gains, he's worked for."

Heh, I like that: "Cool is a temperature reading." That's m'boy!
