Does Anyone Remember?

Today is the 63rd anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the "day that will live in infamy." Hardly anyone remembers it now; it goes by unremarked. Fewer and fewer of those who were over 10 years old at the time are left to remember and hold the anger and pain and fear.

I predict the same phenomenon for 9/11. For us today it is a recent memory and looms large in our own personal history. But when we are gone, it will be just another footnote in the pages of history, far less important than the Holocaust, for instance.

In our arrogance, we think we are the heliocentric nexus of history; we are just another civilization, as arrogant as Rome and equally vulnerable. We should let go of the rampant emotions--but if we forget history and its lessons, we will continue to repeat the age-old mistakes. Some traditions deserve to be broken.

Tonight is also the first lighting of the Hanukkah candles. The victors write the history books. Mazeltov y'all!
