Not Civil in Civilization or Civilian

The news today had this lead paragraph:

Across the city, law and order broke down. Police officers turned in their badges. Rescuers, law officers and helicopter were shot at by storm victims. Fistfights and fires broke out Thursday at the hot and stinking Superdome as thousands of people waited in misery to board buses for the Houston Astrodome. Corpses lay out in the open in wheelchairs and in bedsheets. The looting continued.

Where are the stories of heartwarming mutual support and respect for authority? The emergency lays bare what is happening to our civilization: under the veneer of the supposed rule of law, society is becoming more and more lawless. People are just waiting for a return to nature, red in tooth and claw, the survival of the strongest and most ruthless.

I have thought so for a long time, ever since as a teacher I was forbidden to teach my "white" values to "these children" because "We teaches them to fight back harder and we gets them before they gets us." Negotiation and compromise and nonviolent resolution were whitey's values and sissy stuff.

As ye sow, so shall ye reap. Rome fell; there are no guarantees for western civilization, any mor now that there were then. The barbarians are not at the gates; they live next door.
