Happy Birthday, Brian

The Holidailies prompt for the entry today is "Tell us about a non-major-holiday event you celebrate or remember at this time of year."

That's an easy one. Today is my brother-in-law Brian's birthday. He is the brother with the twinkle in his eye and a warm hearty greeting for everyone. (The other is the dour, self-important one.) Each year I buy a special present for Brian and wrap it in non-holiday paper, often paper that I've bought earlier in the year, when it was easier to find birthday paper.

I'm not really much of a gift wrapper, but for him I make a special effort, since all of his life, his birthday has been folded into Christmas, and all he would get to do is consider one of his Christmas gifts a birthday gift. Wrapped in Merry Christmas paper.

I always put a note on it saying, "Do not open until December 27th" and I try to give him something fun. He always gets tools and neckties and keychains and wallets from the family, so I get him something more unusual.

One year it was a bubble gum machine. Another year I got him a kite. This year it was a jigsaw puzzle of a place he loves to go camping. His brother gave him a book, a re-gift.

I'm his favorite sister-in-law. Heh. His only sister-in-law. And I always remind my husband to call him on this day and wish him a long and healthy life.

Happy Birthday, Brian! Live long and prosper.
