Teaching Safety to Children
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

Plans are in the works to teach children elementary age and older the fundamentals of media literacy and resposibility in school. The curriculum will include the privacy basics of the internet, and the potentially negative consequences of posting personal details on social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Is this plan the result of American concern for children and media-forward thinking? No, it's part of a German curriculum in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the U.S., children are expected to learn about the internet and privacy concerns the same way they learn about sex.

By word of mouth (aka gossip), and trial and error. And, if they're lucky, from tech smart parents.
