The Cat, the Baby, and the River

Dream number who-knows-what:

I was drifting in a river. I was being swept downstream by the current - it seemed like a flood had recently begun waning. For some reason, there I was, being carried from the mountains toward the city.

As I got closer to town, I passed by and old concrete bridge abutment and saw, in a hollow log, a big orange cat. I was able to grab onto the concrete and rescue the cat, and together we kept floating.

I had a sense that my parents were in a city bus, driven by an old woman, driving to meet me farther downstream. They were trying to catch up with me and keep me from going too far down. The bus met me and we turend toward home. We were trying to avoid detection by someone. The cat was fine.

There was a girl baby on the bus, too, and though she hadn't appeared while I was in the river, I knew I had saved her from a floating boxcar. She was fat and healthy and seemed to be happy. I would guess she was 18 months old. Not yet talking, but communicating with those beaming eyes.

I wanted to keep her. I knew I should have called the police as soon as I found her, in the town where I left the river, but somehow I knew she had been abandoned and I didn't want to give her back. I waited until I got home to call.

The police told my mother that the baby's name was Agnes. I didn't like it and wanted to hold a naming celebration - anything but Agnes! The police told me that her parents didn't want her and that she was mine. Everyone rejoiced at the good news and danced around the house.
