Fantasy Job Day
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

Today, my fantasy job is running away to Doe Bay and working there all summer for the sumptuous wage of $10 an hour and a free tent site.

I want to see concrete results of the work I do. I want to wash and fold laundry, set a lovely table, clean things, fix things, chop wood. I want to talk to people, make them comfortable, and see them leave happy (no snickering).

I used to think I wanted freedom from responsibility, but I really want freedom from the responsibility of proving something that is, by nature, ephemeral, unpredictable, and ultimately out of my control. Learning is a stochastic process, and the things my students go home to have an effect that somehow I am supposed to remediate in short order.

I am fine with responsibility. But maybe it's time to find a new kind. My soul just gets so tired between 9 and 3.

Otherwise, life's really good. Really, really good, and I mean that!
