The Cove Without

"It seems then," said Tirian, . . . "that the Stable seen from within and the Stable seen from without are two different places."

Yesterday we began the day at The Cove without power. The winds were reported to be 40mph in the city, which means out here on our little point, they may have been about 60mph. Lots of creaking, shuddering and breaking branches. It happens several times each winter here.

This morning we have no water. The tank to our artesian well is empty. I have about 10 liters of drinking water saved in Schweppe's Tonic Water bottles (love that G&T), on top of my fridge. I made coffee this morning using that water. That's all fine. I know that an 80-year-old water system that in no way would ever meet a code established since 1940 will have its problems. But when there are problems, The Cove Apartments get blamed, and the water association turns off the water to our building.

Once the tank ran dry and my landlady actually called to ask me if my water heater had burst (I'm sure it's blogged somewere in the dark Scout or Heyelsa past). As if I wouldn't notice gallons of water running out of my attic, where the oh-so-thoughtfully placed water heater lives. AS IF.

So today's way of handling it? Landlady "can't make it down" to check the damage herself, so I get a knock on my door, in the middle of my workout, my pudge hanging out of the vast white hills between my sternum and my pelvis. It's the Vietnam Vet who lives downstairs, recruited to "check everyone's toilets" because the landlady thinks someone's must be leaking. Uh huh. I don't think the landlady could have, oh, I don't know, CALLED TO ASK IF NOW WAS A GOOD TIME, or to say, "it's an emergency, I'll have to have VV come in to your apartment, so get dressed and be warned".

No, that would be legal. That would be consistent with WA landlord-tenant law.

I wouldn't say no to a visit by anyone trying to solve an emergent problem, that's not the issue.

It's the unannounced visits. She'll threaten to evict me (or any of us) for one late rent check in 16 months, but can't be as detailed-oriented when her behavior is the thing in question.

The Cove seen from within is bigger than The Cove seen from without.
