It's a grey morning her at the Doe Bay Café. Friends and I are going hiking on Turtleback Mountain, on the west side of the island. Then I don't know what's up for lunch (I'm feeling pan-Asian-ish, so that means a stop at The Kitchen in Eastsound), but I do know what happens later: birthday party! We're having it in the café with the executive chef's blessings. Chocolate torte of some kind, made by Tess, with goodness-knows-what-else to go with it. I have a feeling it will be the most authentic birthday party I've ever had. And to have it happen so close to my departure makes the next few days feel sort of quiet and grainy. Nothing as sharp as some of the indelible experiences that came before. I'm definitely marking time.
