Mojo Workin'

I am working A LOT these days. It's a jam-packed quarter at the community college. Every time I turn around, my supervisor is giving me more work. Yes, of course this is a great thing. For a while.

My job position (and, in fact, every hourly, non-continuing position) is limited to 2,050 hours per year. This is not anywhere near full time. What this means is that I can work up to that number of hours, and then, NO MATTER WHEN IT IS IN THE QUARTER, I have to stop working. It's happened to one interpreter before, so it's no idle threat. There is actually someone in payroll readying the guillotine.

That's why all this work is a mixed blessing: I get great paychecks now, and then later I have to cut my work back to compensate for the frontloaded hours.

Don't fear. Scoutie has a plan.

I may have mentioned the video relay service before. It's an interpreting service set up so that the deaf and hearing clients can have a video call with each other. It's slick. And it pays the same as my community college. And it's four miles from my house. And they pay for CEUs and taking the certification exam. I'm emailing the contact today. I don't want to miss out.

I'd love it if, eventually, I had the bulk of my hours there and just worked sporadically at the community college.

For now, though, I am full up! PAH!*
