me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Kimono

Kimono -- which is the plural of kimono -- are making a comeback among the young Japanese. Young women, and sometimes young men, wear them to go out at night, especially to watch fireworks. They walk as elegantly as the robe demands (the girls do; the boy's kimono are much looser and don't demand much -- seems to be more like wearing your pajamas). They are quite beautiful, when you start looking closely at the fabrics, the sashes (obi), and the small sashes (obihimo) that tie around the big ones. According to our guide yesterday, although really fancy kimono can be very expensive, they're a pretty good deal because a woman in a kimono doesn't wear jewelry, so "no diamond earrings, no pearl necklace."
