me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Seldom disappointed

When I signed on and found ed's comment about Tony Hillerman I didn't know what he was referring to but I had a bad feeling. And yes, it's true. Tony Hillerman, a giant in our field and one of the nicest men I ever met, died yesterday. I knew him a little, and I interviewed him once in front of an audience, one of my favorite interviews of all the ones I've done. He was the only person I knew whose eyes actually sparkled. He had an enormous, friendly curiosity about everything, and didn't seem thrown by much. His mother used to tell him, "Expect nothing, and you'll be seldom disappointed." He used that as the title of his autobiography, and though he never said it, he seemed perpetually caught by the flip side of that same thought: "...but often pleasantly surprised." Thanks for the books, the conversation, and the sparkle, Tony, and Godspeed on the continuation of your journey.
