me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Stop! Thief!

A rabbit, or possibly a deer but I suspect a rabbit, ate my balloonflower. ATE IT. Down to, but not including, the root. The fact that the root's still there removes moles and gophers from the suspect pool, and I still have lilies on that side of the house, so deer are less likely. ATE IT. The thing had taken hold in its new spot and was beginning to bloom. It was having balloonflowers, purple-blue ones. Came in Friday and it was gone. Gone, vanished, as if it had never been. My only consolations are, it wouldn't have survived in the spot I moved it from; and the root's still there, so if I can find a way to surround the spot with things rabbits don't like or can't fight their way through, maybe it'll be back next spring. Meanwhile I stuck some black-eyed susans, which I bought at the church sale and which I wanted anyway, in the area just to have SOMETHING there. Oh, the joys and tribulations of the gardener...
