It's currently 4 AM and I am wide awake. My attitude toward sleeplessness is to not fight it--at this point in time I can always take naps to catch up. So I'm spending the time trying to catch up on the journals I read regularly, as well as check out some of the Holidailies ones.

My cats were SO glad to see me home. My monster cat (I think he gained some weight while I was away) plunked himself down next to me as soon as I had settled in bed. A little while later the shy one took up a spot near my feet. Now the fact that I use an electric blanket has absolutely nothing to do with the eagerness of the cats to share my bed. Right. Anyway, they are very welcome at this point, because I need to stay on my back and not do any rolling over. Add two or three cats to a bed and there's no way one can roll over.

Weather is definitely on the "brisk" side, judging by the frequency of the furnace cycles. I don't want to even think about what the gas bill will be--it has really skyrocketed. So far, the electric is staying fairly steady, which is better than a lot of people can say.

Coming home from the hospital last night I was reminded that the biggest after-effect of Katrina for this area is the TRAFFIC. Add about 100,000 contractors, refugees, and newly-relocated former New Orleanians and suddenly the population has outstripped the road capacity. One quickly learns what times have the least traffic and to make use of one's knowledge of "alternate" routes through subdivisions. Oh--and people who insist on getting involved in accidents should really try to time them for "off-peak" times.

If I go back to bed now (0440) will that count as "night's sleep" or will it be an early nap?
