Long Weekend

My long weekend started about 9 AM when I left Xavier (after teaching my class) and headed home to start the process of getting the "crip card"--aka handicapped tag.

DMV is located in an out-of-the-way location on a street parallel to the interstate. In the past it has been accessible from either end.

Not now. A new interchange is under construction and the road is now closed off at the end I planned to use.

So, I had to cross the interstate and then sort of double back through a very heavy traffic area. I approached from the other side, and found it. I even found a parking spot in front of the building. All I needed to do was get the form my doctor has to sign. I looked around the room and there were only four or five people waiting "to be served." And then I spotted a table where just about all the forms you might ever need for DMV were set out.

Step one took me about two minutes, if you don't count the detours.

The last time I was there was to renew my driver's license, and the wait was minimal. The time before that was when I went for a handicapped tag in late 2005, and the Slidell branch was the only DMV office currently functioning in the metropolitan New Orleans area. It was a horrible experience, because the wooden seats (like church pews) were not at all comfortable. Now they have regular chairs with padding on them!

It's pretty unusual when a government agency actually functions efficiently, at least in this area.

Step two was dropping the form at the doctor's office. I'm assuming that someone will call me when he has signed it. I'm hoping that's Tuesday, so I can get the tag that day and be done with the whole thing. Tuesday is not a Xavier day, and therefore not a problem day for parking at Tulane--I get there about 8:30.

The people at the Women's Center are totally cool and sympathetic--they're the ones doing the most urging re: the parking thing. It may be Thursday before I get there again, but they're aware of this.

If the rest of the long weekend is like this, I shall probably go back delightfully rested.
