Rain was predicted for today, accompanied by sky noises.

However, it didn't start till after lunch. And it was on again/off again.

Unfortunately it was on again when I had to leave work for an appointment. But when I had to actually get out of the car, the rain had died down to a level that my umbrella could handle.

It made up for it after the appointment. I barely made it to my car without having to wade through a largeish puddle.

The drive home was not pleasant. It was raining high speed for the wipers. And there was some serious water on a couple of the streets I had to use because a bridge over the Industrial Canal is still closed for repairs.

Next, there was a fairly solid jam-up by a school. This was one of the areas with mildly flooded streets.

Once past the school, traffic moved along adequately.

Until the big bridge over the Industrial Canal. When we lived here in the 60s it was two lanes wide and a real bottleneck. Now it's higher, three lanes each side, and the drop gates still work. (Just a little ways down another drawbridge across the Industrial Canal let a cop drive right off the end and drown. The drop gates hadn't worked right in a while.)

Basically, the traffic was moving at the pace of an anesthetized snail. How come?

Well, once over the top of the bridge I could see blue lights ahead. By the time I got close to that point things had almost cleared up and I was able to continue on to where I got on the interstate. From then on it was clear sailing (figuratively speaking--although the far right lane still had a bunch of water on it.)

So, I finally got home. It took almost double the usual time, but rain will do that.

Work was interesting. The assistant archivist had loaded my cart with half a dozen boxes of miscellaneous alumnae records. My job is to see what the heck is there, process it into archival folders, photo holders, etc., and make an inventory list. By the time I finish all of them, we'll know what is there and how to arrange it better.

I was reading a couple of the applications for financial aid for JYA (junior year abroad) hopefuls and was appalled by some of the more egregious writing errors from these young women--most of whom carried GPAs of 3.0 and up. I showed them to the librarian (who used to teach high school English) and she said that was one of the reasons she quit teaching.

My contention is that you learn proper grammar and spelling by reading, reading, and more reading. Not by watching TV.

Enough from the soapbox.

I've got a long weekend coming up. Tomorrow will probably be as rainy as today, if not moreso. And Monday the university is closed for Memorial Day.

And that's it for today.
