Interstate 10 is still closed, and has been since relatively early this morning.

Why?

A semi carrying hydrochloric acid overturned on the eastbound side (Slidell) of Interstate 10, spilling said acid.

Both sides were still closed as of the early evening news.

This meant that THE major artery into New Orleans (from the east) was closed. Alternatives were two two-lane highways. One was good old Highway 11 to get across the lake. The other was to head for US 90. Neither route can be described as convenient. I guess the only good part is that it did not happen on a weekday!

So far, the only medical casualties were some deputies who inhaled some of the fumes. Apparently, they are okay now.

According to the evening news, the driver lost control while going through an S-curve that is part of the construction (new three-lane bridges) detour.

The most fortunate part is that no home evacuations were necessary, and the injuries were minimal.

I went to PJ's this afternoon to read the prehistory book, but I took along the current mystery also. I'd collected my mail on the way out, and it had TWO books in it.

I'd read something by Jane Finnis in Eric's blog and thought her books sounded interesting. They are historical mysteries, set in first century (C.E.) Britain. I now have the first two books in my stack of to-read--

As soon as I finish the one in which Alexander (the Great) takes power. I've lost track of how many people have died in this one so far, but the setting and background are great.

Lady managed to lose her new, reflectorized flea collar. She probably caught it on something. I make sure that the collars are just loose enough that they can be wiggled out of--with effort.

Some critters really liked the cantelope balls last night. No sign of them (the melons) this morning.

It rained off and on today, and the weather radar looks like some more storms are coming this evening. Fortunately, my cupboards are not bare, so if it's nasty out I can postpone grocery shopping without any problem.

I'll be interested to hear if ourchemical spill hit any of the national news outlets.
