I drove up to the shelter about mid-afternoon---and they didn't know what I was talking about!

But it turned out fine--while I was there a woman called, saying she could take a couple of dogs for the weekend, but she didn't have transportation. Well--there I was, so I became a dog carrier.

They got three dogs into crates and loaded the crates into my car. I had the littlest dog next to me.

I thought I would never find the place--and I know Slidell pretty well. But it's been ten years (I guess) since I've had occasion to take Rigolets Road. The people live almost to US 90. I pulled up, identified myself, and the man sort of grunted at me and went on edging the lawn. Then his wife appeared, told him what was going on, he said no, she ignored him, their little girl was really excited by the visiting dogs (who were definitely cute) and a neighbor lady oohed and ahhed over the smallest, saying he looked just like one they used to have. They told me to go on home. Evidently, they seemed to feel like they had the situation well in hand. With a little kid there falling in love with the dogs, I'll bet they don't all go back to the shelter.

I called the shelter and left a message on their machine about the situation.

Never a dull moment.

Tomorrow I'll keep on watching the storm track. And I'll try to do some outdoor tidying up. But I'll wait till the last minute before dragging the trash containers and chairs and garden stuff into the garage.

I will continue rinsing the soft drink bottles, filling them 2/3 full of water, then putting them in the freezer in case the water becomes unsafe to drink. (It was about a week after Katrina before our water company took down the "boil" sign.)

Meanwhile--it's breathe in from the northeast, breathe out to the southwest.
