Finally Safe

I figured today it would finally be safe to go to WalMart for some much-needed groceries.

I was right--I got a close-by parking space AND a motorized cart.

When I went to check out things seemed to be going fine until the register jammed up or something. It wouldn't accept my credit card swipe either from my side or the cashier's. A customer service person came over and it wouldn't work for her either. And another one came.

They soon concluded that my groceries and I should go to another register and recheck everything--most of which was already bagged.

That register was quite happy with my card. The customer service people apologized, but it certainly wasn't their fault.

Fortunately, there were no lines behind me.

Just to be on the safe side, I'll check that only one charge went through this evening. (Gotta love the computer age.)

In the afternoon I headed for the bank to make a deposit. No problem there. After that I settled in at PJ's and continued with the Douglas Adams book.

When I got hoome I started opening the mail and about passed out when I saw the cable bill--marked overdue. (I have have that on auto-debit.) Then I looked at it again and it was for the family with the mailbox just before mine. There was also a misdelivered gas bill. Near the bottom of the stack were my cable and gas bills.

I walked over to the house and apologized profusely for opening the mail, then we chatted a bit. She lived there about ten years ago, then moved to Baton Rouge (for work) and rented the house out. She returned post-Katrina and we've just never gotten around to hellos.

Fortunately, she didn't seem upset about the opened mail.

Our mail carrier frequently misdelivers mail. Fortunately, most of my regular utilities-type bills are on auto-deduct, so I don't have to worry about mine going to the next house down the road.

And most of my correspondence is online now.

I guess tomorrow I should give thoughtful consideration to yard work. Or I may get lucky and there will be rain in the forecast.
