Here are some photos of that Epcot Origami Ball I mentioned earlier.

That's the internal structure for the next layer. Each layer is comprised of that lazy-s shape at the lower right. Each unit is folded from a 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm) square of 20 pound printer/photocopier paper. A square is shown in the upper right as an indicator of scale. No glue is used in this model.

Here's the completed current layer. I will eventually build another 'frame layer' over it, but that will be later. To get this far takes 1200 sheets of paper. I don't know how many hours, but I'm guessing at least 40. The structure is very strong, very dense. It weighs half a pound.

The structure's strength is demonstrated by supporting a phone book. This is a sustained test, well within the structure's capabilities. (In other words, it's not even close to breaking down, in large part because I don't want to break it!)

The 'frame' is less susceptible to damage, so I've lightly thrown it from shoulder-height down to a carpeted floor. My previous model for this I gave to a friend, and to demonstrate its structural integrity, I side-arm threw it (think dodgeball) again lightly, from 6 to 10 feet away onto a sofa.

Work is stopped on this model for the remainder of this week because my real job (I don't get paid for this) is ramping up and I need to meet some rather steep deadlines. Also, Kitten has mentioned this to her craft workshop's teacher, who is very interested in seeing this. If I'm up to it, I'll start a new one and try to post a making-of series of blogs.
