I've seen my comments and replies to same turn into blog-post size ramblings. Here's one to Reenie's well-thought article on why she chooses not to decorate or participate in rituals for Christmas.
Funerals are for the living, Christmas decorations are for children.
Agree to both, fully for the former, partially for the latter -- I feel the whole "I want a pony!" thing is very much for the children. The "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" moments are for adults, either to remember the innocence and excitement of Christmases long, long ago from their own childhood, or to feel same for their progeny at that same age.

I think Christmas is a time to remind people to think of those around, to consider the presents under the tree in the light of those who have less (and also in the shadow of those who have more. Let's be honest here. :) )

From this, I hope we all carry forth the spirit of "peace on earth, good will toward myn" throughout the rest of the too-long year between this holiday. I'm sure no one will disagree that we need more of that sentiment throughout the world, and, moreover, each day as opposed to merely one.

For those blessed with the inner peace that comes from the quiet assurance of their own convictions regarding events two millenniums ago, to celebrate the start of the final phase of a centuries-old grand design. (By some power in whom I cannot claim faith. :) )

I think there are multiple ways to celebrate the season. Giving and receiving gifts are but one, and the materialistic spirit so often portrayed in commercials is best left for children who don't know better.
