Diagraming the Origami Models

This entry is written after the Tie Fighter, Perfected blog entry. A friend asked me if I was going to diagram how to make these three models.

I'd love to. I really would, but am not sure how to write them in a way such that someone else can follow the ones for the Death Star and the TIE Fighter.

The X-wing is basically a frog base. Almost all other X-wing origami models are also based on the frog base. I'm sure I can sketch up some way to reproduce that.

The TIE Fighter is more problematic. Few models utilize 60-degree folds, which is required for the hexagonal wings. The spars are very difficult to form, and by the time it is fully formed, it's more paper shaping than folding.

The Death Star is just insane. It's a very simple shape, repeated hundreds of times. The shapes are simple, but the interconnections are quite interesting. This requires three-space thought, which few other models require. Most origami models can be flattened. The layered ball models are most definitely not flatten-able.

All of this is just random musing. The background thought that drove these words is simple: when I die, if I don't diagram these models, then I fear the techniques to create them will be lost.

That's just the instance. The generalization is applying this worry not just to origami models, but to philosophy, to ethics. Be it fiction or thought, if left unshared, they will accompany the deceased into the dark, denying the world of their light.
