So I encounter the following assertion, more or less so stated, quite frequently: That it is wilfully misleading to assume that Al Qaeda would ever have teamed with Saddam Hussein. AQ consider SH as vile and evil as the United States and so would cooperate with neither, as it wished both destroyed.

If that is so, then why was Osama bin Laden supposedly so eager to cooperate with the US during the Soviet-Afghanistan war, to the extent that there are those who claim we "created" him?
