Slightly Smitten Musings

OK, I'll admit it. I have a crush. The most serious I've had since my OU days. What makes this one different than the majority of my other serious crushes is that this is a person who I know well enough that he's comfortable hugging me hello. (A lot of my friends here, guy and girl, hug hello and/or good-bye. It's kind of nice, really. And though it certainly doesn't mean we're best friends, you can see how a hug connotes a certain level of familiarity. Yes, I'm retreating into scholarly language to get distance. It's what I do.) Someone, in other words, who I actually knows I'm alive -- as opposed to most of my other major crushees. And though this might be a sign of maturity, since I'm crushing on someone I could actually get together with, as opposed to someone who is completely unavailable, it does present a problem. Because I could ask this guy out. Which means, as Lala and Emm have told me, means I should ask this guy out. And that isn't that easy for someone who's only recently overcome enough of her shyness to talk to people she doesn't know that she doesn't have big, daydreaming-inducing crushes on. (That last sentence seems grammaticality muddled, but I can't figure out how to fix it. Sorry.)

Anyway, I had a fun weekend, even if it was at the expense of Crazy Tree leaving town. (Boo.) I went to his (as of today ex-) apartment on Saturday for some musical weirdness that I'm not going to explain here, as I think it might make a good scene in the Novel-Type Project (hereinafter referred to as the NTP). Then Zan and BA's band was playing Sunday night and the other band Zan plays bass for was playing right before that, so I headed up to the LES to see them. I hadn't seen Zan's other band before. (John Carpenter and The Pines (?), nee John Carpenter Project). They were awesome. It didn't hurt that everyone in the band seems to be more than competent as a musician, but the music itself was kickass. I'm in a very indie rock phase right now, so I enjoyed it a lot. It's very different from what Zan and BA play, although they were really good as well. I've heard them several times now, and I've never heard their voices sound as good as they did last night. Which, as Zan mentioned when I told her that, was weird because she had a pretty wicked cold. Though I do remember a voice major at OU telling me once that she sounded great when she had a cold because her nose being stopped up forced her voice into the very place in her throat where her voice teacher was trying to get her to go. I know that sounds weird if you haven't ever had any voice training, but it does make sense.

I'm going to go watch How I Met Your Mother and get vicarious thrills from someone else's romance for awhile. Just wanted to employ my blog-given emoting rights.
