Before we get to the meat of this post, I just want to point out that my Internet universes are colliding again. This time it's my Pindeldyboz managing editor writing up the Texas men's NCAA preview for Deadspin. This is why Lala thinks we're the same person. Though obviously we're not since we root for diametrically opposed sports teams (she's an Astros fan, too). So perhaps we're more like the bizarro versions of each other.

Anyway, I am currently in the process of celebrating the first birthday since I turned 12 while wearing glasses. (I figured out yesterday that I have now been wearing contacts for more than half my life. It kind of freaked me out.) There's nothing actually wrong with my eyes, thank goodness -- I went all the way up to Washington Heights on Monday to see Emm's opthamologist and make sure -- there's just something off about my contact prescription. And since I'm so blind no doctor ever has sample contacts in my power just lying around, I have to wait until the various samples she ordered come in to go back in and get my "eyes" back. Good thing I just got the lenses in my glasses updated.

I don't really mind wearing glasses; this pair, oddly enough was the birthday present I asked my parents for when I turned 24, so that in the event of a situation just like this I would not have to wear the ten year old glasses with a broken earpiece and the not-lightweight frames that make my ears start to hurt after a few hours. In New York (perhaps just in the northeast in general) it's a lot more common to see people my age wearing glasses (Nn, Zan, and the Surrealist all wear them on an everyday basis). Whereas I can remember feeling very conspicuous the few times I've worn glasses out in Oklahoma since I've been an adult. It just seems like contacts are much more common there, particularly for teenage and twentysomething girls. Radio Brother did wear glasses for a little while in high school but that's only because he was a wimp about sticking his finger in his eye. He got over it eventually. (Married Brother's never even had to go to the optometrist, which is perhaps the best argument for him actually being an alien from another planet and not related to my family at all.)

So, eyewear aside, this is shaping up to be a pretty good birthday. I'm having dinner with Yan tonight. Friday, Yan, Lala, the Director Boyfriend (who was nominated for a Daytime Emmy today!), and someone who I think I'll call Herbal Gal (up to now referred to as a "friend of Lala's") are going to see a ballet version of Edward Scissorhands at BAM. And Saturday, Zan, BA, and Minnesota J are having a party at their palatial apartment in Queens. In other words, everyone's finally starting to come out of the social hibernation winter always seems to induce around here, just in time for my birthday.

Did I mention it's almost 70 degrees here today? I took a long walk at lunch. After two straight years of below freezing birthdays, that's probably the best present of all.
