I.

A grad student came up to the office just now to check out some books from our resource library. While I was typing his information into the borrowing list, he spotted my picture of Quentin Griffin and asked if I was a Sooner.

"I was," I said.

"Oh," he said, "I'm a Cowboy." So I had to explain about my numerous family connections to that particular institution. "So you're really more of a Cowboy than a Sooner," he said.

"Yeah, kind of," I said. Turns out he's also from Stillwater (no wonder he's a Cowboy), but he didn't know any of my relatives that lived there. Odd, though, in light of ...

II.

On Monday, there was a message on my line from a Whitney O'Steen. (I know I don't normally use real names, but it's kind of hard to tell this story without them.) "I'm here at NYU for the summer and I got your GAP order by mistake," she said.

I called her back, saying I appreciated the trouble she'd gone to but I hadn't ordered anything from the GAP.

"Oh," she said. "Well, they said it was ordered on a credit card by a Whitney Steen from Tulsa, Oklahoma."

Now, my credit cards don't have Tulsa listed as my address any longer, so I was sure I hadn't just suffered some strange internet shopping related amnesia. But the weird thing is that I know, from previous identity confusion, that there is another Whitney Steen in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who would be about college age by now. I tried to explain this to my almost Doppleganger. Of course, I don't have any clue how to contact the other Whitney from Tulsa, so she wasn't that impressed.

"What are the chances that she would be at NYU, too?" she said.

"That would be pretty freaky," I said.

III.

My parents are coming to visit tomorrow. I thank the universe for trying to warn me, but it's been on my calendar for a while.
