In Praise of the Temp

Mood:
Way more relaxed than I should be

I should have had a terrible work week. Old Boss came back to do a program this week, and if anyone remembers my little freakout when we did this last year, then adds in that New Boss was in South Africa the entire week, we received twenty five new registrations the day before the program and all the logistical arrangements had to be adjusted, plus I interviewed a whole mess of new videographers, the logical conclusion would be that, by Friday afternoon, I would be a quivering mass of Jello only hoping not to lose blobby pieces of myself down a sewer grate on my way home.

But I am not.

Because we have a Temp. And she is awesome. Also, she's here. And working full-time. And every problem I've had with this job for the last year and a half has stemmed from feeling like the only person in the department who could be described in that way. When all those last-minute registrations came in, there was plenty of time for me to up the catering order and ask for more chairs, because the Temp was handling confirming the registrations and dealing with people who came in to get their books, or had questions about their books, or wanted to whine about not getting a book even though they couldn't be bothered to actually come to the program. If I'd had to deal with everything that happened that day while I was all alone in the office? I would be fired right now, because I probably would have thrown one of those books at someone. Probably someone with tenure.

This is serving not only as a quasi-anonymous internet thank you, but a practice for the speech I'm going to give New Boss next week. After all, she's still a Temp, and it's becoming more and more obvious to me that we need two full-time office staff here on a permanent basis.
