What I Did on My Winter Vacation (and the Week After)

So ... my vacation could have started better. I thought I'd caught a break by leaving NY on the Monday after the nasty storm, but American decided to cancel my flight due to mechanical reasons anyway. One crazy car ride to Philadelphia (including three crossings of the Walt Whitman Bridge while the driver tried to double back to the airport exit), and an overnight stay in St. Louis (which was not paid for by the airline because their computers were all down and couldn't print out a voucher) later, I made it home. Only about 12 hours late.

Other than that, it was a pretty good vacation. Science Girl got Rock Band 2 for Christmas, so we spent a lot of time playing that. She also got the AC/DC expansion tracks, which are crazy hard, especially vocally. Though it did lead to my dad trying for "Brian Johnson" and ending up with "Canadian pirate" which literally had me lying on the floor, I was laughing so hard. (Then I felt bad, because he wouldn't sing after that.) I had to sing "Back in Black" practically in my choir voice to get us through it. I did manage to squeeze in a few (though not nearly enough) visits outside the family, and even got a couple of 70 degree days to enjoy -- which I'm really happy about, now that we might see single digits by the end of the week. And apparently my airport karma swung back to good by the time I left, because I actually got into Newark early, and caught a train after only five minutes wait. On a Sunday!

Of course, I have been spending the last week messing around with the Roku player my parents got me for Christmas, so I can watch my Netflix Instant Queue on my TV. You know how I've always said that I don't have cable because I'd just spend all my time watching TV? Yeah, this is exactly the situation I was trying to avoid. Especially now that I've discovered the Pilates and Yoga videos on the Instant section and can justify my MI-5 marathons by pretending I'm actually going to work out every day. This is why I was so pleased with myself for getting the Christmas decorations put away yesterday -- it was the only thing productive I've done since I got back. I still have a half-full suitcase in the hallway.

Oh, yeah, and there was some sort of football thing last Thursday that kind of took up some time. But I think I've worked through my feelings about that. Mostly.
