The Pirate Movie

NO! Not THAT Pirate Movie. THE Pirate Movie. The one from 1982 with Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol. Have you seen it? I have. A Lot.

I had an old copy on VHS that my parents had recorded off of HBO years and years ago. It was grainy and in general not a very good copy, but it was all I had. Every couple of years I would break it out and be amazed at how many of the lines I remembered and how many of the words to the songs I still knew. I LOVED it.

So, a few weeks ago, when I was laid out with bronchitis, and I watched just about every movie on the 495 cable channels I had, I happened upon The Pirates of Penzance - the movie from the 80's with Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt - and what The Pirate Movie was based on. I've seen bits and pieces of that one, but it didn't come close to my movie. Come on - Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt? Up against Christopher Atkins (HOT) and Kristy McNichol (cute)? No comparison.

Anywhoo, back to my story. So I watch a few minutes of this movie and start jonesing for The Pirate Movie. Only thing is, I figured the tape was stashed away in a box in the bottom of our closet, and I was SO not digging that out! I was too damn ill. But, I decided I'd take a chance and look through some of the old tapes stacked on the shelf of the entertainment center. Lo and Behold! There it was!

I was so thrilled, that even between fits of coughing up a lung, I managed to hook up the VCR and put that baby in.

AHHHH!!!! I was in heaven! That movie did more good for me that day than any of the medicines I had been taking all week.

But something was missing. Say, the faces of everyone in the background maybe? Like I said, it was a grainy copy. And blowing it up to 44 inches on our big t.v. did nothing to help. There was only one thing I could do - order it on DVD, if I could find it.

I trudged over to the computer with a cup of tea and a big box of Kleenex and pulled up Amazon.

There she was, in all her glory, in stock! And it was only $13! Since I was there and if I ordered $25 worth of stuff, I decided to look for a few other favs from the 80's that I owned on VHS but not DVD - Back to the Beach and Xanadu!

Woohoo! I was in business! Needless to say, when they arrived a few days later, I watched them immediately. I was in Nirvana!!

But, something was still missing. Ahh, yes. I know. The soundtrack. OK, so I'm a dork, I know. But I just had to have it. However, this proved to be a little more difficult to track down. There were a few copies on eBay, but those were all LP's. I might as well continue to watch the damn thing on VHS if I'm going to own the soundtrack on LP! But I kept on the search for the CD. And my time and efforts paid off.

Today I received, in the mail, I a brand spankin new copy of The Pirate Movie original motion picture soundtrack on CD! In all honesty I figured it was going to be a pirated (hahaha) copy from an LP, but it wasn't! Apparently in 1994 thay re-released the soundtrack on CD. And, where I found it on eBay on LP for upwards of $50, this CD was only $19.95 + shipping. There is a God!!!

So, sorry I haven't posted in a very long time, other than the Free Associations, but between being sick and working my butt off, I haven't really had a lot of time to myself (except to watch The Pirate Moive). I'm going to try to become more diligent in my writngs and postings (I have not been doing any writing. It's a long story, but I just haven't been in the mind set. That's a story for another day.)

And if you haven't seen The Pirate Movie - find it!! Rent it, buy it, beg, borrow or steal for it. If you like cheesy 80's movies, especially musical ones, I promise you won't be dissapointed. Even if you aren't a big fan of them, you need to see it any way. And let me know when you do!!
