Books and other stuff I feel like discussing

By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Going back in time

One of the book discussion groups I attend enjoys choosing a play from time to time. When we were getting the calendar of choices ready for the last half of this year, we talked about plays in general and someone wondered why we never had tackled any Shakespeare. Light bulbs flashed on above heads all around the table, and next Tuesday we're discussing Hamlet.

I found a DVD at the library of a BBC production with Derek Jacobi as Hamlet, Claire Bloom as the queen, and Eric Porter doing a marvelous turn as Polonius.

I also still have my college textbook from the fall of 1960, complete with my freshman notes in the margins, recorded as we discussed the play and the graduate assistant who was assigned to teach us led us through the script.

I can vividly recall the crush I had on him. I can also vividly recall the pleasure I got as he pointed out concepts in the drama which seem obvious now after nearly 50 years of life experience. I didn't have much of that in the fall of 1960!

I'm getting a huge kick out of watching the play and following along with the book open on my lap. And I'm also wondering if the group on Tuesday will agree with my freshman lit teacher?
